SUMMARY:Community Dinner + Conversation: Faith & Science
DESCRIPTION:Both “faith” and “science” are ways of understanding and making meaning in the world. They offer portals to mystery\, wonder and awe. But they’re often also pitted against one another\, seen to be in competition with one another\, or offered as a false choice; as if God can’t be active in more than one sphere of our lives or is somehow against our longing to understand God’s good creation and our place in it. Come to our next Community Dinner & Conversation\, where we’ll get to talk together about the intersections of faith and science! We’ll be joined by Astrophysics Professor Emeritus Lawrence Rudnick\, whose Jewish identity deeply informs his worldview\, and he is passionate about being in interfaith dialogue around the intersections of faith and science. \n

SUMMARY:Fall Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Fall Retreat is always a favorite of the year – open to new and returning students alike! Don’t miss out on this great chance to get away\, explore creation\, connect with God and get to know new friends! Join us for a restful weekend as we head to beautiful Luther Crest Camp near Alexandria\, MN. \nWe put this retreat mid-October\, because that’s the time when we all need to catch our breath\, and connect with ourselves\, with God\, and with others. We have lots of open space for you to do what you need to rest\, and just enough formalized time so you can get to know people you don’t know well. The camp is beautiful\, new to us this year\, and Pastor Kate’s pumpkin pancakes on Saturday will still be happening! \nCost to you is $50\, thanks to generous donors. Scholarships are available! Study bugs take note – there will be a good balance of structured and unstructured time (with plenty of time to get homework done)! \nWe hope you can join the fun! Register as soon as you can\, but for sure by September 30!

SUMMARY:Coming Out Day Blessings
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate National Coming Out Day and the queer community\, LCM student leaders and staff will be out in front of Coffman with donuts\, stickers\, and of course\, giving out blessings to honor our queer siblings\, recognizing both the joys and complexities of coming out. Come find us and receive/give a blessing! \nTo help this event feel full\, lively\, and invitational to all who walk by\, we would love to see our entire community there! It’s so important for the campus to see a Christian community celebrating queerness\, so stop for some donuts and blessings! And we could also still use help staffing our table\, so if you have time in your schedule (even half-hour chunks!)\, and want to help this important part of our ministry on campus\, email dana@umnlutheran.org!

SUMMARY:Conversations that Matter: Knowing\, Being Known\, and Our Call to Repair
DESCRIPTION:Each summer\, we gather with friends\, and friends of friends\, to join in an important conversation about our shared life together and our shared call in the world. It’s a chance to meet some bright and interesting people\, practice the lost art of curiosity\, and have a good conversation about something that matters. \nAlumni and current students\, church folks from across the metro\, faculty and staff\, and board members are all a part of this milieu – you are invited too! We’ll be engaging with the recent work of David Brooks\, How to Know a Person; and/or a subsequent lecture he offered at UVA on the theological underpinnings of this book. Once you RSVP\, we’ll be in touch with more details! \nThis event is one way we are continuing and expanding the conversation our students began during the school year on division and polarization\, this time focusing on what might be done on a more intimate level – in our neighborhoods\, schools\, and homes. Emerging research and political thought locates loneliness and isolation as some of the root causes of our discontent – as individuals\, as communities and as a nation. There are practical steps we can take to heal some of the divisions among us\, which can also animate and undergird the important policy work that needs to happen. \nWe are called to both love our neighbors as ourselves\, whether we agree with them or not. We are also called to be repairers of the breach\, and restorers of the streets we live in. This is a monumental and complex call and one we cannot do on our own. Luckily we have one another! \nPlease RSVP here today! I’m looking forward to being in conversation with you! -Pastor Kate \nPS – If you’d like extra credit\, you can check out this book on Hannah Arendt where among other things\, the author elucidates Arendt’s work that links loneliness and totalitarianism. Don’t have capacity for that? You could also listen to this On Being podcast episode with the author for a conversation on similar themes!

SUMMARY:Community Dinner + Conversation: An Open Conversation about Loving Our Neighbor
DESCRIPTION:Wed.\, November 8 @ 6:15pm | Grace | RSVP here so we can plan for food! \nWhether on our social media feeds\, through the news\, or our daily lives\, we as humans bear witness to suffering all around us. Recently\, the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA\, Elizabeth Eaton said that “God has called us to be a people who stand with others amid suffering” — As people of faith\, how can we engage the world\, in all its joy and beauty\, heartbreak and suffering\, without growing numb or turning to despair? How can we stand with our neighbors in suffering\, while also caring for ourselves along the way? Why as Christians is this an important part of our call? This is what we will talk together about as a community over dinner in a couple of weeks — come ready to discuss and engage with one another and our staff in these complex\, important questions! We will have dinner out at 6:15pm and begin our conversations at 6:30pm. \n

SUMMARY:LCM Spring Break 2024: Reconciliation and Renewal in Northern Ireland
DESCRIPTION:We live in a culture where everyone seems to be ‘dug in\,’ defensive about their values\, and deeply suspicious of anyone who does not share them. We are divided along lines of politics\, religion\, geography\, race\, and class. We long to connect with others\, and still\, we hold our values for a reason – they are deeply held\, formed over a lifetime\, and informed by our religious traditions. Is it even possible to build and sustain relationships across lines of difference in a culture that is so fractured? \nIf you are interested in exploring these questions over your Spring Break\, learning from people in Northern Ireland\, and taking rest in the history\, traditions\, and natural beauty of that place\, consider joining Lutheran Campus Ministry-Twin Cities for our Spring Break in 2024. \nThe details:\n \n\nWe will stay at the Corrymeela Retreat Center\, and will both learn and rest together under their care. They were founded after WWII\, and played a significant part in the peace process in Northern Ireland after “The Troubles.” In short\, they know something about walking with people who are deeply divided. From their website: “Our vision is that by 2025\, we will have contributed towards a more cohesive and hope-filled society by welcoming thousands of people into courageous conversations which deepen our respect for each other so that we can live well together.” They will lead our programming\, which will include conversation and challenge\, AND a chance to explore and rest in the countryside.\nCost is $750. Scholarships are available. If you or your family has capacity to contribute additional dollars\, we welcome that contribution.\nWe will ask you to collectively participate in raising $17\,000 additional dollars to fund scholarships and the remainder of our trip. We will work together to do this!\nThere are only 12 spots available\, so if you’re interested sign up as soon as you can to indicate your interest in the trip!\nStill have questions? That’s okay. Get your name on the list (using the link above) and we’ll invite you to our informational meetings in the Fall.

SUMMARY:pause student worship
DESCRIPTION:During the school year\, we meet for worship at 8pm at Grace University Lutheran Church — we call it pause because it’s like taking a big deep breath in the middle of the week. Our worship together is at the center of our community and the point from which our action on campus and in the world springs. You can expect mostly students to be in attendance\, acoustic music\, beautiful art\, robust conversation\, and opportunities for engagement. Our communion table is open\, meaning that anyone who would like can participate\, regardless of what your tradition or beliefs are. This is one way of expressing that when we say all are welcome\, we really mean it.

SUMMARY:LCM Reads
DESCRIPTION:It’s become a tradition for our “LCM Family” to gather for a good conversation around a topic that is interesting\, hopeful\, and good to talk about with other people. Current and former students and board members\, donors and community supporters\, faculty and staff\, pastors\, youth workers\, you name it – you are invited! \nThis year\, we’ll be talking about the book “Together” by Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. It is clear that we are in the midst of a crisis of belonging. Loneliness can have devastating impacts on individual lives\, and I’m increasingly convinced that its tendrils are contributing to the deep division and polarization in our communities\, nation\, and world. \nCultivating communities of belonging\, to God and to one another\, is (and always has been) at the heartbeat of our collective work as a church. It is my great honor to get to do this on campus\, learning from students what it means\, and what it takes\, to build communities where people don’t just fit in\, but can really belong. We trust that what we’re learning is transferable outside of our church walls\, and outside of the narrow demographic we serve on campus. We also know that we have a lot to learn from you! \nPlease get this on your calendar and RSVP here and we will be in touch around a location a week ahead of time. \nPS – The author has recently been in the news after issuing a Surgeon General’s Advisory on Loneliness and Isolation\, below there are a couple of shorter podcasts and articles that you could also take in if you can’t get to the book in time for the gathering. What I like most about the Surgeon General’s work is that alongside naming the problems\, he proposes simple\, pragmatic steps that we can take alone\, and together\, to address what has become an epidemic. \nResources and Links:\nBook: Together by Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy \nPodcast: On Being Episode: To Be a Healer\, Krista Tippet interviews Dr. Vivek Murthy \nArticle: NY Times — We Have Become a Lonely Nation.
