Welcome New Students!
Written by Lexi Wolt
Hello, new Gophers!
As I start my third year at the University of Minnesota, I remember my first semester on campus. The advice I got from everyone I knew who had already gone to college was to “join as many student groups as you can!” I was told it was a great way to make friends, which aside from handling my classes, was one of my biggest concerns about going to college. I knew I wanted to find a faith-based group, so I spent time looking at the websites and social media of different groups around campus. When looking at the different groups, I struggled to find one that was openly welcoming to all people, especially the LGBTQ+ community. Few groups were clear on what they stood for.
That was until I found Lutheran Campus Ministry. With a slogan that says “God loves everyone, no exceptions” and the words “queer affirming” in the Instagram bio, I knew LCM was a place that aligned with my values. Since I started coming as a freshman, I have met and become friends with some of the kindest and most genuine people I know on campus. LCM is a community that truly does welcome all.
I went to the spring retreat as a freshman who had come to worship maybe three times (and hadn’t really talked to anyone since it was on Zoom), so I was nervous that it would be awkward and I wouldn’t have anyone to talk to. One of the LCM leaders at the time immediately welcomed me, told me she was glad I was there and introduced me to another LCM freshman. I spent the whole weekend getting to know people and really immersing myself in the community. I knew then that I would keep coming.
If you are looking to join a student group with genuine community and real conversation, I hope to see you at our pause worship Wednesday nights, or at one of our events. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out – my Instagram is @leximwolt. Good luck with the start of your year!
